Teaching Math to Five Year Olds... Online

Boot Camp feature for Tuesday, February 10, 2009

Teaching math to five year olds...on the Web. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It is the first release from a company called DreamBox Learning...an eLearning startup....based in Microsoft's backyard in Bellevue, Washington. And the software is designed to give kindergarten through second graders...a good start in learning math. CEO and co-founder Lou Gray...

"It's a Web page, so a parent will go in, log in for that child. The child will then go into the product and choose a game character that will follow them through their adventures. If a child goes into the adventure park, which is where most of the lessons are, each child is going to see a different screen because from the very beginning that child is being assessed as to what is appropriate for them."

Having the software reside on the Internet....has a number of advantages...

"Until 2006, the timing wasn't right. Broadband penetration wasn't pervasive enough, PCs weren't powerful enough. Consumer behavior, children weren't using the Web with any consistency, but very importantly, the Web technologies were not in place to deliver a solid experience."

There's no software to download and parents have the ability the monitor how their children are progressing. How well a child is able to control a mouse may determine whether he or she gets easily frustrated with the program. Subscriptions start at under 8.50 a month....but you can try it out for two weeks for free...at dreambox.com. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
