New Netbook From HP

Boot Camp feature for Monday, February 23, 2009

Another new netbook...from HP. Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. There's some big time competition going on in the market...for little computers. They are called netbooks...or as Hewlett Packard calls them...Mini-Notes. Product marketing manager Robert Baker...says the new model 2140...with a 10.1 inch screen, adds some new features...

"The product is very similar in many ways to the 2133 that we had out before from a durability and reliability standpoint. We kept the 3D accelerometer on board as well as the anodized aluminum case for the durability standpoint, we will see increased performance with the Atom 1.6 processor as well as battery life performance and improved thermals. Battery life we're shooting to get up to four hours battery life out of a three cell battery and up to eight hours battery life out of a six cell battery which is a significant improvement over the prior generation."

So it's possible to have a netbook that would run on its battery for eight hours while it's using the WiFi?

"Actual results always kind of vary with battery life. But we feel like a reasonable usage scenario is going to get you close to a full day battery life."

With a 160 gigabyte hard drive list pricing will be about 500 dollars. Keep in mind...netbooks aren't designed to tackle processor intensive computing tasks....and there have been reports about higher than typical return rates in the industry because of that. But for extreme portability for basic email, Web browsing and social networking...they work just fine. Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
