Should Your Next Computer be From a Non-Computer Company

Techstination feature for Monday, February 23, 2009

Should your next computer be from a non-computer company? Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. That's the sales pitch from a company called Digital Gadgets...which has licensed the Sylvania brand name for a line of netbook PCs. Managing director Paul Goldenberg says making only netbooks...and not other kinds of HP, Dell, Lenovo and an advantage....

"The point is they're all computer companies. We're not a computer company and we're focused on only making netbooks. And we have no interest in making laptops. And that's why in our mindset we differentiate it. So all these other companies, although they're powerhouses by nature, are still primarily computer companies. And I think they still have to look at computers and laptops and desktops and such as an integral part and a major part of their business. Whereas the netbooks that they're producing are a necessary evil for them."

Goldenberg argues those companies would prefer to be selling higher priced, more profitable laptops to consumers. Digital Gadgets has netbook models starting at around 300 multiple colors...and with either the Linux or Windows XP operating system. What's next?

"We're looking at a couple different tablet, touch screen. It's going to get smaller."

For consumers...the competition in the category is good news. Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
