Do Consumers Want Greener Mobile Phones

Boot Camp feature for Monday, August 17, 2009

Do consumers want greener mobile phones? I'm Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear. It comes in blue and green, has charger that blinks to remind you to unplug it, and is largely made from recycled or biodegradable materials. Sprint began selling the Samsung Reclaim this month...for the bargain basement price of 49 dollars. Will consumers go for it? Sprint CEO Dan Hesse says...

"The research is telling us that customers are increasingly looking for the companies they do business with to be more socially responsible and they're also looking to buy greener products. The research tells us that. But actually when we were researching this product, it's not as though consumers are screaming for a green device. And that's why when we built this device with Samsung, we focused primarily on making it a great wireless device that customers would choose as best in class."

Why aren't more phones made this way... Hesse says, for the moment, it is simply too expensive. You can find us with archives, interviews and more....at BootCamp.com. I'm Fred Fishkin.
