Safety when buying online. I'm Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear. Just about everyone these days, it seems, does at least some of their shopping and often banking online. Especially at this time of year. And while generally speaking it is pretty safe...especially using credit cards that offer online buying protection... there are some steps you should take to make it safer. The digital security company Gemalto offers free advice at a site called JustAskGemalto.com. And says the company's Brittany Jedrzejewski....one big concern...is buying or banking when you're connected through a public hotspot...


"And the reason is because the data that's sent over these hotspots or over these networks is not encrypted. And information like your credit card data is not something you want to send over something that's not secure."
