Bundling the Wired Net With Wireless

Techstination feature for Tuesday, November 30, 1999

Wearing your email on your belt. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. Can't stand to be away from your computer? Do you go through withdrawl when you can't check your email for a few hours? A company called RCN is now offering an Internet service package in many parts of the country that includes a wireless device called Blackberry. When you're away from your PC, you're still in touch. RCN's David Epstein...says don't be fooled by the Blackberry's pager-like appearance...

"It's an Intel 386 with a couple megs of RAM in there and a two-way wireless modem. And what it does is it mirrors your Internet email account. So if you're, of course you get all your email on your computer at home when you log in or if you log in from the office, but what this Blackberry does is it extends that email address to your belt. So every message that's sent to you, you receive on your belt, same address, synchronized with your desktop, and if you want to send a message back to someone or out to a group of people....a distribution can bang it out on this little keyboard with your thumbs."

It may sound awkward but the typing is surprisingly simple. The combined package for Internet access, the Blackberry unit and wireless service sells for 45 dollars a month. You can find more information at Need a web address from this or a previous broadcast? You can find a complete archive at
