Let's Get Ready to Rummbblle

Boot Camp feature for Friday, December 3, 1999

He's turned five words into a career...that now includes one of the hottest new video games on the market. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. You know the voice....

"Let's get ready to Rumble.."

Ready2Rumble Boxing from Midway is one of the most popular new video games for Sega's DreamCast and now for both the PlayStation and the Nintendo 64. And the voice behind the game, Michael Buffer, couldn't be happier...

"We came up with a fabulous game that I think everybody of all ages can play. Of course, I'm the emcee and it starts off with me saying ladies and gentlemen...let's get ready to rumble."

If he said it like that, he wouldn't be where he is today, but you get the idea. So how did that trademark phrase come about?

"Actually that was like in '83 or '84. You know, I remember a few years back, Muhammed Ali...nobody used to sell a fight like Ali...and at his press conferences or weigh in before the fight, he used to go through this little litany of...Oh, I'm looking good. I'm so pretty. I'm ready to rumble. I'm chopping wood ...I'm running. And I kind of like fine tuned that phrase and put it with let's get ready to rumble."

You can get a ring side seat for the video games...for under fifty dollars.
