Is it Time to Buy a 3D TV?

Boot Camp feature for Monday, June 14, 2010

Is it time to buy a 3D TV? I'm Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear. TV manufacturers are rolling out 3D. Of course you need special glasses, which are pretty pricey, and then something to watch. New 3D channels are being introduced and 3D Blu-ray players are on the market as well. At Panasonic, display product manager Julie Baumann says sales so far....are better than expected. But there is a problem...manufacturers have yet to agree on standards for the technology....and Baumann says...

"I think there would be frustration on the consumer's part if, for example, they saw a deal on someone else's glasses and then realized that our glasses are more expensive but someone else's glasses don't work with our TV for example. I think, in general, it would benefit the consumer electronics industry if there was a standard."

The question is...will consumers who buy into 3D early be stuck...if the standard turns out to be something other than what they purchased. You can find us with archives, interviews and more at BootCamp.com. I'm Fred Fishkin.
