TechToys For Grown-Ups

Boot Camp feature for Thursday, December 16, 1999

The difference between men and boys...is the price of their toys. Have we got some toys for you. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. The hottest high tech toy on the market this year....is DVD...

"Digital video disc, of course, will one day replace the video cassette recorder. Tape breaks, tape deteriorates and Hollywood has embraced the product. Five thousand titles are out now."

And says Jack Wayman of the Consumer Electronics Association....prices have dropped to 229 or 239. Don't look now, but China's leading consumer electronics company, Konka, is helping to drive prices down pushing into the U.S market. DVD is great, but you can't record on the machines that are out there today. But you can on what are called digital video recorders. You've heard the commercials...they let you pause live TV. You've basically got two choices here. RePlay TV, available online only for now. The other choice is called Tivo, being sold by Philips. Tivo VP Morgan Gunther...

"Once somebody actually looks at the unit and has a football game on or a favorite movie and they pause live TV or they fast forward and rewind...the sale is made."

The cheapest model, that can store fourteen hours of video on a hard drive sells for about five hundred dollars. If you still have four or five thousand dollars left, you can start thinking about high definition TV.
