An app to help in personal emergencies. vSOS.

Boot Camp feature for Tuesday, May 10, 2011

An app to help in personal emergencies.   I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear.   We’ve all heard of those gadgets you can wear in your home…that let you press a button to get help when you’ve fallen down and can’t get up.   Well, take that concept, turn it into an app that can work anywhere, and you’ve got the idea behind vSOS from Nuvel.   CEO Jay Elliot…

“Basically there’s an icon on the screen, it’s called vSOS.   You press it, hold it for three seconds.  It sends out a message to a call center.  When you press the button it also sends out a message to five other people.  The call center then would respond to me and they would respond to me and they would either call me.  If they couldn’t get hold of me they would send emergency relief immediately.” And how would they know where you are?  “GPS.   GPS on the phone gives them exactly where I am, probably within a meter.”

There’s a 30 day free trial, after that, vSOS costs about 10 dollars a month.   It’s available for iPhones.  An Android version is in the works.   You can find us at BootCamp.com.   I’m Fred Fishkin.
