High Tech Home Decorating Help

Boot Camp feature for Friday, January 14, 2000

The high tech way to decorate your home. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. What would that sofa look like with a different fabric? Or how about trying different wallpaper in the dining room? A website called goodhome.com uses some great online technology to let you see for yourself. GoodHome co-founder Marilyn Bellock...

"The decorating studio is the part of the site which we get very excited about because it uses proprietary visualization technology to help the consumer visualize room design for her specific choices."

For instance, click on, say, a contemporary living room...

"So you can see..I'm clicking here and the room is changing out so you can see how it would look. And you might say, eh, I don't like any of those choices, I had some other things in mind...so if you decided you wanted to pick something completely unique to your taste, you would say okay, I'm going to click on decorate with your own selections."

Don't say I didn't warn you... you could spend hours deciding how to reupholster a chair....

"I'm going to select a style of fabric. And let's say here I'm showing a traditional fabric. I personally happen to like a large floral and I happen to like yellow. So, what will happen is this will search through our database ...right now it's 16 hundred fabrics and we'll be adding to that as we go along..."

What the GoodHome site does is give consumers some of the same tools and choices that a pro would use.
