New Roku device to feature games

Boot Camp feature for Thursday, June 16, 2011

There’s another new game machine coming to town…and it’s not from Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo.   I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear.   While it may not be a game console in the traditional sense, Roku has a new device in the works that will let consumers play the kinds of game they enjoy on their smartphones or tablets…on their TVs.   CEO Anthony Wood announced an agreement with the developer of Angry Birds to bring that game to Roku.  In fact, there will be a whole Angry Birds channel.  And he says…there will be more…

So Angry Birds is just the first.  We have an open platform, of course, so anyone can download our software developer kit and publish on Roku.  But we’ll also be working with other large publishers or other popular publishers to bring them to Roku as well.”

Wood says unfortunately, the games won’t be playable on existing Roku boxes…which remain one of the least expensive ways to bring streaming movies and other content onto any TV.   You can find us at BootCamp.com.   I’m Fred Fishkin.
