Long range weather app can help pick best vacation week

Boot Camp feature for Monday, June 27, 2011

Worried about the weather on your summer vacation?   There’s help on the Web.   I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear.    When you’re planning a vacation, whether it’s nearby or far away, you’d like for the weather to cooperate.   While there are no guarantees, WeatherTrends International has been in the business of providing long range forecasts to corporate clients and now has a free site for consumers and smartphone apps as well.   CEO Bill Kirk says it’s different from the typical weather forecast….

“We use statistics, math, climate cycles to really project next year’s weather.  Because, you’re right, the short range computer model technology is really good about 5, 6,7 days out.  It’s not very good beyond that.  So again, just very, very different technology.”

The site at WT360.com claims an 80 percent accuracy rate.   Again, it’s free.   The iPhone app costs 99 cents.  An Android app is on the way as well. You can find us with archives, interviews and more at BootCamp.com.   I’m Fred Fishkin.
