Roku on a stick! Roku's Streaming Stick on the way.

Boot Camp feature for Thursday, January 19, 2012

Roku on a stick.   I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear.    Roku, the company that makes small boxes that bring streaming content from the Internet onto TVs, will be out with a new gadget this year, the Roku Streaming Stick.   What is it?    CEO Anthony Wood…

“It’s a small device, about the size of a USB flash drive that is actually the complete Roku player on a tiny little stick.  And you plug it into a TV and it turns the TV into a smart TV and it brings the complete Roku platform with all the software updates and channels to that TV.”

It sounds cool, but the one downside is the Roku Streaming Stick will only work with TVs that have what are called MHL ports.   There aren’t too many of those so far, but more manufacturers will include that technology this year.   In the meantime, Wood says Roku will continue to grow its channel offerings and look for more partnerships with cable and satellite companies.   You can find us at BootCamp.com.   I’m Fred Fishkin.
