Boot Camp feature for Tuesday, April 10, 2012

Stock photos by subscription.   I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear.    He started the company nearly a decade ago with photos he had taken himself, now Jon Oringer says Shutterstock boasts more than 18 million images.   The site is designed to bring image sellers and buyers together and Oringer says the technology behind the search capability on the site is what really sets it apart…

“We have a few different things.  One in beta right now is Shutterstock Instant, and you  can go to Shutterstock.com/instant, it’s a different way to search.   Historically you would use key words to search but here you start with a key word and you can see a visual display of other key words that may be related to the ones you’re search for.  And you can kind of parse through and it gives you suggestions as you go, visually.”

Individual images can be purchased, but the big business for Shutterstock is its subscription plan.   You can find us at BootCamp.com.   I’m Fred Fishkin.
