A Link to Lost Latino Relations and Heritage

Boot Camp feature for Wednesday, March 1, 2000

The music is hot and so are new Latino Web sites. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. English is by far the dominant language on the Internet but take a look around and you'll see ads for more and more Hispanic sites. One of the newest and most unique is called Zonai.com. That's z-o-n-a-i. VP Luis Gonzalez...

"Zonai is community or a portal created in Puerto Rico for the Puerto Rican community. We hope to unite the communities both in Puerto Rico and in the mainland. As we all know...there are four million Puerto Ricans living in the island and about another four million that live in the United States."

The site is backed by Puerto Rico's most popular newspaper, El Nuevo Dia. One of the objects is to help people discover their heritage and relationships...

"There's a lot of people that know they're Puerto Rican but perhaps have lost contact with their home town in Puerto Rico or some cousins or some uncles, aunts....so I think this will help to unite the community much more."

Online search tools will help. About 1.7 million Puerto Ricans on the island and the mainland are on the net...

"It's very important to point out that the incidence of usage among Puerto Ricans is the highest in the Hispanic community in the United States."

The site again...is Zonai.com.
