Staying in touch from just about anywhere. DeLorme's inReach

Boot Camp feature for Friday, September 7, 2012

Staying in touch from just about anywhere.   I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear.    One of the things some people worry about when they venture out onto hiking trails or even drive  where there is no cell phone service …is how can they stay in touch?   A device called inReach, from DeLorme,  is making satellite communication affordable.   Product and Design Manager Chip Noble…

“It take advantage of the Iridium satellite network and allows a user to send and receive a text message from anywhere in the world, that’s global coverage pole to pole.  You can use the find me, follow me tracking and locating feature, to send your location every ten minutes from your device to a Web site where people can go and see exactly where you are on the map.  They can then use that Web site to send you a message.”

The inReach is small and connects to Android and iOS devcies.  It sells for about 250 dollars with service plans starting at about 10 dollars a month.  You can find us at BootCamp.com.   I’m Fred Fishkin.
