Free Langauge Lessons on the Web

Boot Camp feature for Monday, March 20, 2000

Learn a new language, online, for free. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a ThirdAge.com report on computers and technology. Planning a vacation? Or maybe a business trip? Or perhaps you're just looking for another new challenge. Whatever the reason, a Web site called Parlo.com, that's p-a-r-l-o, is offering free immersive lessons on the Web in Spanish, French and English. Parlo co-founder Varun Bedi...

"Parlo is the leading destination for folks interested in learning languages and about other cultures. And so what we have on our site is something called virtual immersion, which basically replicates the study abroad experience on the Internet. There's no really other place to have an experience like this except in the country itself."

Bedi, by the way speaks all three languages taught on Parlo... .plus two more. The site uses chat rooms where you can converse by typing text in your new language. And there's music... . (sound)

"With the music you can listen to, but with the lyrics alongside so you can look at the lyrics and the hard words are highlighted alongside. A great way to learn the language as well as experience the culture."

. Parlo has it's own magazine, written in the language you are learning, with the level of difficulty customized to your progress. Again it's free. They plan to make money offering language books and tapes. You can find us on the Web at ThirdAge.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
