Engineering toy designed for girls: GoldieBlox

Boot Camp feature for Wednesday, March 6, 2013

Toys designed to get girls interested in math and science.   I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear.    She studied mechanical engineering and product design at Stanford and couldn’t help but notice the scarcity of females in her classes.  Now Debbie Sterling is trying to do something about that.  She’s in the toy business as creator of GoldieBlox….

“So GoldieBlox is a construction toy paired with a book series.  The book series stars Goldie, she’s the girl engineer, girl inventor, and she goes on adventures.  And along the way she has to solve problems by building simple machines.  And the machines that she builds help out her friends.  So as girls read along with Goldie’s stories,  they get to build what Goldie builds with the construction kit.”

GoldieBlox …that’s g-o-l-d-i-e-b-l-o-x….will be available next month for about thirty dollars.   There’s more info at GoldieBlox.com.  You can find us with archives, interviews and more at BootCamp.com.  I’m Fred Fishkin.
