Better than GPS. I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear. We’ve all pretty much gotten used to use GPS in our phones and navigation devices to get from here to there. But what about when your device can’t receive satellite signals…like when you’re indoors. A company called IndoorAtlas has developed technology that uses the earth’s magnetic field. CEO Janne Haverinen says there are loads of potential applications…
“For example, you can find your friends on campuses, or you can activate location based advertisements inside retail stores. Or you can use it for way finding or you can build social applications.”
IndoorAtlas has created software that will work with the compass chip hardware inside many phones already. It expects that we’ll begin to see it in use later this year or early next. You can find us with archives, interviews and more at BootCamp.com. I’m Fred Fishkin.
