Tablets transforming cars: Volvo

Boot Camp feature for Wednesday, April 15, 2015

Tablets are transforming cars.    I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp,  a report on gadgets and gear.     LCD screens first started showing up in cars as part of navigation systems.   Now some car makers are using bigger screens that can do much more.    At Volvo, the new XC90 features what amounts to a built in 9 inch tablet.  Communications Manager Jim Nichols…

“And what’s great about it is a lot of information that would traditionally be hidden in menus in cars is now available through a much easier interface.   When you’re looking at navigation you’re still able to see all of your music and your phone information and anything else that you have.  And that was very important in the design in not only making it user friendly but also making sure that it is not a distraction to the driver.”

The tablet has a proprietary operating system developed by Volvo.   For connectivity, users have the choice of using a built in AT&T connection…or they can tether the smartphone of their choice.   You can find us at BootCamp.com.   I’m Fred Fishkin.
