Technology and the quality of life: Liftware

Boot Camp feature for Friday, January 29, 2016

Technology and quality of life.    I’m Fred Fishkin with technology BootCamp, a report on gadgets and gear.     To be sure….technology it isn’t always beneficial.   But then there are companies like The Liftware Group, owned by Google, which is focused on helping people with illnesses and disabilities live more normal lives.   The first product is the Liftware spoon and fork.   Founder Anupam Pathak says it uses the kind of stabilization technology often found in digital cameras, to combat the effects of tremors often caused by Parkinson’s…

“Inside, there’s a little computer that works to kind of sense the person’s tremor.  And let’s say you have a spoon attached to the handle, it will move the spoon to the opposite direction to the person’s motion.  And that way the spoon is not moving nearly as much as the person’s hand is.”

Restoring the individual’s independence and dignity.   The Liftware starter kit sells for about 200 dollars.  You can find us at BootCamp.com.   I’m Fred Fishkin.
