Tech Help With Toy Shopping

Boot Camp feature for Wednesday, August 16, 2000

Mommy... Daddy... buy me that toy! How many times have you heard that? So, you give in and buy the toy in the store. And all too often by the next day you find little Danny has already lost interest in it. Toy boxes and closets are filled with one day wonders. So maybe shopping online is a better idea. First of all... there's no whining factor. I want that! And some sights are using technology to help you make better choices. Al Noyes is with SmarterKids.com...

"SmarterKids is basically two things. First of all, we're the leading educational toy store on the Web. We offer thousands of books and software programs and games and toys for parents who really want to help their kids learn. Fun and educational products. Secondly, SmarterKids is a great resource for parents. We have things like a learning style survey. Parents simply answer a few questions and SmarterKids helps them understand exactly which products fit their child's particular way of learning."

Even if you don't buy the recommended toys, you may find some insight in what the survey results show about your child... .

"Some of the questions SmarterKids Learning Style Survey asks parents is, does their child hum while their child's reading... or does enjoy games with other members of the family."

Another section on the site, Grade Expectations... gives moms and dads the lowdown on what their child will be learning in school in the next year. You can find us on the Web at Bootcamp.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin for CBS News.
