Surprise! Online Grocery Shopping Works!

Boot Camp feature for Friday, August 25, 2000

Believe it or not pointing and clicking your way through a grocery shopping list really works. Who says so? Consumer Reports. In the September issue, Senior Editor Tod Marks says an evaluation of six grocery shopping Web sites around the country found they really deliver...

"I was prepared for the worst. I actually participated in this. We bought over two thousand products in eight states and had them delivered to quite a few shoppers, undercover shoppers. And all these folks... nobody really had anything bad to say about the services."

Those tested included Albertsons, Netgrocer, Peapod, Shoplink, Streamline and Webvan. And yes... you can even gamble and buy ice cream online...

"I had ice cream that was the consistency of pea soup one day, but I called them up and asked them to replace it and they did."

So here's the deal if you want to try this... don't expect to save money. Typically prices are higher online. What you will save is time and the aggravation of having to go to the store. But...

"If you're the kind of person that likes to squeeze the tomato, absorb the aroma of freshly baked French bread, then it's not going to be very fulfilling."
