Online Video Editing From Lycos

Boot Camp feature for Tuesday, September 12, 2000

Video email goes mainstream. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. With more and more families and friends using their PCs to stay in touch, the folks at Lycos are betting that pictures, especially video pictures, are worth a thousand words. At Lycos Alka Gupta says what you can log onto now... is the Lycos Video Center... .

"Which is a fully integrated, easy to use personal video broadcasting center. What does that really mean? Imagine, if you will, that you've just videotaped your baby's first footsteps. And Lycos now enables you a really simple way to upload that video to your personal video center. You can share that video, you can edit it, you can do a slew of activities that are now much closer to the end user than ever before and that currently are available on the Internet."

All you really need is an inexpensive Web cam... but more and more PCs today... from Apple, IBM, Compaq and others will let you connect digital video camcorders. What Lycos is using is technology from a company called VideoShare to lets you edit and send videos right from the Web... ..

"The service is absolutely free. What we allow for in the user's personalized video center is ten megabytes of space. We have found that with the typical video being taken and the clips that are being taken this is pretty reasonable for starters."

Using the compression on the site... that's almost an hour of video. You can find more information at Lycos.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin... Bloomberg News.
