The World Series...on the Family Room Wall

Boot Camp feature for Wednesday, September 27, 2000

Wondering where that presentation projector went? Maybe it's in the family room. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. Want to watch the Olympics, or the World Series on a screen as big as a wall? Apparently... a lot of people do. Portable projectors are increasingly being brought home from offices... to do double-duty on the weekends. At InFocus... Pierre Richer admits...

"A lot of people here do. The beauty of this is that the video, the quality of the video is phenomenal and you can bring it home, you can hook up a DVD player, you can hook up a VHS player, you can hook up your camcorder, your digital camera and you can display this on any wall in your house."

Provided you can darken the room. Even though projectors typically sell for two thousand dollars and up, InFocus... which solidified its number one position not long ago with the acquisition of number two Proxima... .sees demand growing in the home market...

"Although we think the home, the home market is a huge potential, today it's still mostly a commercial usage for the projector, but there are a lot of people, there's a lot of investment being made to get the projector smaller, brighter and more affordable and there's projectors starting to be designed for home usage."

In the meantime, maybe you can just borrow one from the office for the weekend. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg News.
