Look-Ups, Languages & More...Encarta Expands

Boot Camp feature for Thursday, November 9, 2000

Microsoft expands the Encarta line. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. It has become the best selling reference line in the world. It's hard to find anyone, especially young people, who makes use of a print encyclopedia anymore. It's just a lot easier to find information on a CD ROM that can be updated continuously from the Web. Claudia Ender is the product manager for Encarta Reference Suite 2001... .

"New, in terms of features, is the researcher which allows you to compile information from the Internet as well as from the Reference Suite and to edit and use it for your own project. Another feature that's new is Encarta Today which brings you news on a daily basis up to your desktop with push technology if you are on the Internet and entices you to learn more about daily events. So with one click you can go up to the Web site and get updated information and with another click you can go to the encyclopedia and get background information."

Other new products in the line... are the Encarta Learning Language series... Spanish and French... which use speech recognition...

"And these two products bring language learning alive for you. It's a way to actually converse with people on the screen and get feedback from them. So it's a very interactive way to learn the language. It also includes a study planner."

So if you're planning a trip... say for next February, it will help schedule your lessons so you are ready in time. It can be helpful for business, pleasure... or for students. You can start out with a free course online at Encarta.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg Radio.
