A Sneak Peak at Sony's Airboard

Boot Camp feature for Tuesday, December 5, 2000

The slogan Think Different... may belong to Apple... but it's a way of life at Sony Electronics too. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. They seem to have similar "go your own way" philosophies. Take the way Sony goes about making personal computers...

"When we entered this PC market three years ago, all the standards made by Intel and Microsoft, we don't want to just copy those things."

So, says Sony Electronics President Fujio Nishida... they took a different approach... .looking at the PC as an entertainment device right from the start. They've tailored their Vaio line of desktops and notebooks... to consumers who want to explore digital photography and digital video editing. And if you want a peak at Sony's glimpse of the future... .look to Japan... .where the consumer electronics giant typically introduces products to come. For instance...

"One is actually an Internet appliance ... portable, so that I have very easy access to the Internet or email or even a TV broadcast."

You have to see it to believe it. The device called the Airboard... let's you carry a flat screen tablet around... to surf the Net... watch TV... or a DVD movie that streams from a base station. It just went on sale in Japan... and should migrate to the U.S. market in the not too distant future. It fits right in with other unique products from Sony... the company marketing a twelve hundred dollar robotic dog... just for entertainment.
