Xbox for Next Xmas?

Boot Camp feature for Monday, December 25, 2000

Just unwrapped that new Playstation2? Microsoft says... wait 'til next year! I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. When it comes to game consoles, Sony, Sega and Nintendo are the big three. But by this time next year, that list will include a new name. Microsoft has big plans for what it calls... the Xbox... .

"Xbox is a game console that you connect to your television to play videogames and we will be delivering that console and begin selling it next Fall. Right now, we're on a great path for development. Everything's going very well and we have a lot of developers signing up to do some really amazing games."

Robbie Bach a senior VP at Microsoft who also holds the title of CXO. That's Chief Xbox Officer. Electronic Arts has signed on to produce ten games in the first six months on the Xbox platform... joining other leading names in the industry. But if you already have a Sony or a Sega... .why will you want an Xbox?

"We'll have about three times the graphics power than any other console has. We have a much higher end audio system. We'll have a hard disk which will make Internet, online game play much more exciting on Xbox."

And, like Sony's PlayStation2, the Xbox will play DVD movies and CD music. Microsoft hasn't firmed up pricing yet, but the CXO tells us it should launch at a price competitive with the PS2. You can follow future developments at Xbox.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg Radio.
