Shareware, Freeware...Alive and Well

Boot Camp feature for Thursday, December 28, 2000

Have a new computer on your desk... or PDA in your pocket? Find new software for it for free. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. Freeware and shareware programs have been around since the beginning of the personal computer revolution, but a lot of people still aren't aware just how much is out there. At the Lycos Computers destination... manager Cyndy Bates says the site now has the largest collection of free downloads on the Web...

"We have a collection of over 125 million downloads to offer in all kinds of categories. Screensavers, which is by far our most popular category. We've got screensavers on everything from flowers to monster trucks to Christina Aguilera. And then we also have business utilities, Linux utilities, password keepers, browser add-ons, things like that."

Some are try before you buy... others are completely free. And if you have a new PDA... .

"We have over ten thousand downloads for handhelds, including Palm Pilots, PocketPCs, Hanspring Visors. And those are all rated, reviewed and virus free."

Other sites you can turn to with great software collections include CNET's download.com, Tucows.com... that's T-u-c-o-w-s, and ZDNet.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg Radio.
