Boot Camp feature for Tuesday, January 23, 2001

One of the best known names in cases for notebook computers is expanding its scope. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. "We're very big into anything for security devices, power devices, connectivity. Basically anything for when a user, a road warrior, is on the road with a laptop, we all know there are so many frustrations associated with that... so all these devices solve one or many of those frustrations."

Geb Masterson of Targus. Among the hottest new products, devices that let laptops utilize digital wireless phones as modems to connect from anywhere. And there are similar solutions for handheld PocketPCs as well... .

"These are wireless Web cards. So now I can connect my PDA via the CompactFlash to my telephone. So I could be in the car, I could be at the beach, I could be at the pool, whatever, if I want to download email, whatever."

The connections sell for about 129 dollars and are available currently for four different models of digital phones. More are on the way. The solution is one of the least expensive ways to wirelessly connect to the Web. Instead of paying an additional subscription fee, you are simply using minutes on your wireless phone plan. You can find more information on the Web at Targus.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg Radio.
