Virtual Stock Picking Vs. Bill Gates

Boot Camp feature for Wednesday, February 7, 2001

Go head to head picking stocks... against Bill Gates. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. It's called the MSN Market Challenge... .go up against Bill Gates and fellow participants in a virtual portfolio contest. Microsoft's Money Central Senior Markets Editor Jim Jubak...

"You don't have to use real money, it's all virtual. You get to pick four stocks and there are three rounds. The first one starts... well, registration is open now, but the actual contest starts on the 19th and whoever wins, as in who gets the best performance, wins and the prize is five thousand dollars in each round. There's a charity component, fifty cents for each entry goes to Big Brothers, Big Sisters."

And mostly, says, Jubak it's a chance to have fun. Once you've picked your four stocks, however, you have to stick with them through the end of the round... picking Microsoft is not mandatory...

"No. What you want to do is pick the stocks you think are going to perform best. It's a short term game and therefore it's a strategy that's probably different from your normal investment style. So, it's a chance to try out different things and one of the things we want you to do is use the tools on the site."

Each of the three rounds will last two weeks. Again, for each person who signs up, Microsoft is donating fifty cents to Big Brothers, Big Sisters... up to a total of 150 thousand dollars. You can register to play at Moneycentral.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg Radio.
