Strategy Shift For PeoplePC

Boot Camp feature for Monday, April 16, 2001

PeoplePC goes after the corporate workforce. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. It's a deal that's hard to beat. A brand new PC, unlimited tech support 24 hours a day, in-home service and unlimited Internet access for as little at 24.95 a month. PeoplePC has signed up hundreds of thousands of customers in just 18 months. And many, says CEO and co-founder Nick Grouf are signing up through word of mouth... .

"Word of mouth for us is incredibly powerful and I think that's because of the investment we make in making our customers happy. We just did a survey of our members... .94 percent of our members were exceptionally satisfied with their membership. 87 percent had already recommended PeoplePC to a friend and because of this 30 percent of our new members come to us through the word of mouth channel."

Members sign up for three years... the computers are theirs to keep. Part of the deal is... they receive non-intrusive marketing offers online. While individuals can still join... .the focus now is on corporate efforts to wire employees...

"Large corporations like the Ford Motor Company, like Delta Airlines, like The New York Times came to us and said... could you help us put PCs in the home of every single employee."

More companies are signing up all around the world. The plan now is to expand the product line... to include broadband and wireless Internet access... cell phones and handheld computers as well. The company expects to be turning a profit within a year. You can find more information at PeoplePC.com. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg Radio.
