Digital Camcorders Gain Popularity

Boot Camp feature for Wednesday, May 9, 2001

When it comes to camcorders... digital is the way to go. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bloomberg Bootcamp. With graduations, weddings and family vacations coming up... this is prime time for the camcorder business. And if you're buying... you'll find digital models have gotten more affordable. What are the advantages?

"Consumers are able to get spectacular image quality, spectacular color reproduction because we're recording that signal as a digital image, plus beyond the functionality of a camcorder, they're able to have the functions of a digital still camera combined into one."

Canon's Michael Zorich. The company's updated ZR line... includes all of those features at prices starting at under 700 dollars. If your computer is equipped with what is called a FireWire port... .as many new PCs and Macs are... you can connect the digital camcorder directly to it. And Canon has teamed up with a company called Media 100 to help consumers learn how to take advantage of those new capabilities. Media 100's Ethan Becker...

"Icanstream.tv is a joint venture between Canon and Media 100 to promote streaming media and teach people and inspire people to get their video online."

The site is an educational channel that also offers a free scaled down version of the company's video editing software... .

"The tools have made it a lot easier for the consumer to dive in."

A fast PC with lots of hard drive space is a must. Again the Web site... .is icanstream.tv. Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin, Bloomberg Radio.
