Video Game Makers Prepare for Big Year

Boot Camp feature for Tuesday, July 3, 2001

A big year ahead for video game makers. Bloomberg Bootcamp, a report on today's technology. Sony will be upgrading the Playstation 2... .Microsoft is coming out with the Xbox and Nintendo will release its GameCube... as a follow up to its new handheld... the Game Boy Advance. It all takes place this fall. Which platforms will win out? Some big game makers aren't taking any chances. At THQ, for instance... the game plan is... .

"We're developing for all platforms. We have games for Playstation 1, Playstation 2, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Xbox and GameCube in development currently."

THQ's John Ardell. The company is expecting its biggest year ever in game sales... even though the costs of developing for multiple platforms are higher. For younger children... THQ's Liz Pieri says the licensing of recognizable TV characters is the key...

"We consider ourselves number one in that category. We've got 44 percent of the market share. So this holiday we're going to be rolling out more brands than ever before. We've got Nickelodeon's Rug Rats, Wild Thornberrys, Jimmy Neutron, Rocket Power, Sponge Bob... we work with Mattel on their Wheels line."

But THQ's biggest licensing deal for video games is with the WWF. The expectation is... .there isn't room in the video game ring for Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo... .the question is which ones will be left standing after the holiday season of 2001. Bloomberg Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
