Remote PC Control Via the Web

Boot Camp feature for Friday, July 13, 2001

Access to your home or office PC from anywhere. Bloomberg Bootcamp, a report on today's technology. Where ever you happen to be... .from a laptop on the road... from an Internet café ... .you can sit down in front of any computer and use the PC at your home or office as if you were there. There have been programs like PCAnywhere that have allowed you to do this kind of thing for years... .but it requires the installation of software on both ends. But not with a new Web-based solution called GoToMyPC from a company called Expertcity. Expertcity's Brian Donahoo... says it is secure and works even with firewalls... designed to block network intruders... .

"GoToMyPC technology looks like standard Web browsing, so it's completely friendly. Your GoToMyPC session technically looks like you're browsing the Web. So it works through firewalls without special configuration."

The host PC should be always on... preferably with a high speed connection to the Internet. Our tests found it to me remarkably easy to use... and it allows drag and drop file transfers between the host and remote computers. The target market...

"We're targeting the remote, mobile workforce. Thirty seven million Americans today travel or telecommute or like to work from home after hours or on the weekends. That's our market."

On the downside... the technology is subscription based and expensive. Individual plans begin at 9.95 a month... corporate plans start at 250. You can try it for free before you buy at GoToMyPC.com. Bloomberg Bootcamp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
