Graphics Leader NVIDIA Branches Out

Techstination feature for Thursday, August 30, 2001

A leader in PC graphics... branches out. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. These have been tough times for most tech companies... .but not for one called NVIDIA. It is enjoying record revenues and profits thanks to it's popular graphics chips found in PCs, notebooks... .and even the upcoming Xbox from Microsoft. Now NVIDIA is branching out...

"What we're introducing is a whole new system architecture for the PC."

NVIDIA's Michael Lim. The company is creating chips that will add high end video, audio, networking and communications to PCs with no add-on cards needed. And Lim says the technology should dramatically improve overall performance...

"For instance, on Ethernet, we've got the fastest download transfer rate in the industry. We're something like 17 percent faster than the fastest Ethernet add in card solution available today."

There should be cost savings for consumers buying the new systems as well. Also new for NVIDIA... something it calls Personal Cinema. It will bundle 3D graphics with a TV tuner and digital video recording...

"Control live TV, pause live TV and give you all the ability to do the same thing as Tivo basically. That's the TV portion. In addition, you also get to play back your DVD movies with a remote control. All the functions you're used to with your normal consumer DVD playback."

Product manager Huy Nguyen says the technology will be used by a variety of manufacturers... and should add about fifty to seventy five dollars to the price of a typical graphics card. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
