Boot Camp feature for Thursday, September 6, 2001

The video game consoles race towards the finish line. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Microsoft has delayed the launch of its upcoming Xbox in Japan. But here in the U.S. (sound) Xbox technology officer Seamus Blackley says they'll cross the finish line in time for the November 8th launch...

"It's pretty impressive when you see a million square foot warehouse full of Xboxes and we're starting to see the final build of these games. It's kind of unbelievable. The quality of these games is higher than anything I've ever seen before for launch."

Xbox will be competing with Sony's Playstation 2 and Nintendo's Gamecube. Nintendo has delayed its release by thirteen days until November 18th to have more units on hand. In many households... .it could be a tough choice this holiday season. Microsoft is polishing its sales pitch... .

"Well Xbox can just do things that no other console can. Kids see the games on Xbox, and it's a complete freak out experience for kids. It does things that they've never seen before."

Microsoft is saying the winner in the console war will be the one with the best games... and its strategy in working with game developers gives it an advantage... .

"The hardware is important to the guys who make the games but for the consumer, you know, it's a toaster. You put it under the television and you forget it's there. It's about what it does for you. It's about the content. It's about the games. So all of our focus has always been on the games. At the end of the day, it's about what that technology can do, how can it make you feel. And that's entirely how we're focused."

But when it comes to console games... .Nintendo and Sony have much more experience. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
