Big Names Boost Internet Sales

Boot Camp feature for Thursday, November 19, 1998

Using big names to sell on the Internet. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. You've probably heard the ads by now for a web site called Priceline...

"Hi, this is William Shatner and here at Priceline, we've got some great stories..."

. Buying all kinds of things on the web is getting to be big, really big. A new site called electronics.net, a spin-off of cybershop.com has hired model Cindy Margolis...who has been dubbed the most downloaded woman on the Internet...as its official spokesperson. Margolis knows a thing or two about business. She was taking a college class...

"I was studying business and one of the courses was, if you had your own business, what would it be? And at the time I had dabbled a little bit in modeling and in a last ditch effort I said, you know what, I'm just going to take one of these modeling pictures, put it on a greeting card and say, I have my own greeting card business."

The rest, as they say, is history. CyberShop founder Jeff Tauber...hopes Cindy Margolis' fame on the Internet will bring customers to the electronics.net site. Once they're there...

"The site has been set up for both the surgical shopper. The one that wants to do a search and find something really quick and if they want to do a price comparison, they can immediately do a price comparison."

. The site is offering free shipping through the end of the month.
