AOL 9-11-01 Messages...In Book Form

Boot Camp feature for Thursday, November 8, 2001

From the messages posted online on September 11th and after... .a book to benefit the survivors. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It is called "Because We Are Americans". America Online editorial director Jesse Kornbluth and his staff have sifted through the messages and poems... ..that were posted on September 11th and in the days that followed... and have put them in book form...

"It's genesis really is what we at AOL discovered on September 11th, which is that the Internet was an amazingly important way of people first to find one another at a time when certain phone services were down. Then it was a way for people to share a lot of complicated feelings."

It may be a difficult book to read... likely to bring back tears... .but Kornbluth believes it is an important chronicle...

"There's a rich tradition of people writing war letters. This is the first war in which American civilians are essentially soldiers. And so what you have are people writing amazing, late at night accounts of what happened to them at ground zero. And then you go out to the heartland... to people you think aren't as immediately affected and you see them being really powerfully moved and wanting to do stuff."

Because We Are Americans from Warner Books... sells for 2.95. All proceeds will benefit the New York State World Trade Center Relief Fund and the Red Cross. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
