Will This Be the Year of Bluetooth?

Boot Camp feature for Wednesday, January 9, 2002

Will this be the year of Bluetooth? Bloomberg Boot camp, a report on today's technology. It is a different kind of wireless technology with a funny sounding name. Bluetooth... named after the Danish Viking King Harald Bluetooth... is designed to replace the rats nest of wires you have around your computer if you're like me... .and can also enable communications between all kinds of electronic devices. But until now... it has been long on promise and short on real product. At TDK Systems, David Curl says the Bluetooth evolution is underway...

"It's the next big thing really, for us."

TDK has several Bluetooth products on the market now for connecting PDAs, PCs and notebooks... and linking them, for instance to Bluetooth enabled wireless phones... which could connect to a Bluetooth handsfree headset ...

" Increasingly, we hear Bluetooth not being talked of as the next technology... but as a now technology. It means for example that you can ... sitting in an airport or sitting in a train or a reception waiting for a meeting... you can check your email without a lot of paraphernalia. That's one of Bluetooth's primary advantages."

Eventually, the technology could be built into all kinds of things... .digital cameras, camcorders... even cars...

"Bluetooth has tremendous potential... it could be a very pervasive technology."

And after long delays and lots of promises... this could be year when the wait is over and you'll finally be using it. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
