Thinnest Notebook Yet... From Toshiba

Boot Camp feature for Wednesday, February 6, 2002

The thinnest notebook computer yet. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It is just six tenths of an inch thick and weighs 2.6 pounds. But the new Portege 2000 from Toshiba includes built in wired and wireless networking, a 20 gigabyte hard drive lots of memory and a 750 MHz processor... .

"Toshiba's going to be the king of mobility."

Senior product manager Craig Marking. While sales of desktop PCs have languished, Toshiba has gotten out of that business altogether, demand has increased for notebook computers. The Portege 2000 packs a lot of power and connectivity for its size. The 22 hundred dollar price does not include what should be a necessary CD, DVD or CDRW drive. What Toshiba does include... is the kind of battery life that notebook users will love...

"We are using a lithium ion polymer battery. The key is that we are able to deliver a two hour battery life with the primary integrated battery with the system. Additionally for those people who are going to be traveling and working continually while away from any type of AC, we are going to be bundling a second high capacity battery that will add an additional four and a half hours or so of battery. You're looking at an amazing six and a half hours of battery life for essentially tether free working capabilities on this ultra light notebook."

The battery snaps onto the bottom... adding to the size and weight... but only when you need it. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
