New Devices From Palm

Boot Camp feature for Tuesday, March 5, 2002

New devices from Palm. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Facing increasing competition from the Pocket PC platform, RIM's Blackberry line and a new handheld from Sharp... the folks at Palm are out with two new models. On the low end... is a new M130... .

"It migrates two really exciting key technologies down into the entry level space, color and rechargeability. And this product will be introduced at 279. It just makes, for a lot of people, a lot better reading experience... a lot more fun to look at."

Palm's Andrea Johnson. Color does make a big difference in readability in all kinds of light. Until now... the least expensive Palm with a color screen has been the M505... in the four hundred dollar range. It is being replaced by the new M515...

"This has a brighter display and it has a user adjustable brightness setting. It also has more memory, it has 16 megs of memory. This is a product that's aimed at our corporate and enterprise and professional customers. They tend to have more applications, corporate applications, large databases, and the additional memory is really handy for them."

There is no built in wireless connectivity... as there is with the Palm i705 another model recently introduced that is the most impressive device from Palm in a long time. So in some ways, these new models seem like a step in the wrong direction. The built in Palm connection and SD slots will allow wireless expansion. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
