Digital Video Everywhere... SnapStream

Boot Camp feature for Thursday, March 28, 2002

Digital video everywhere. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Being able to watch TV on your PC is nothing new. Add on cards have been able to do that for years. What is new... .is software that lets you record programs onto your PC and share them through a home network... or watch them on a handheld PocketPC device. SnapStream is the name of the software and the company that makes it. CEO Rakesh Agrawal...

"Once the use has recorded their TV shows in SnapStream, they can push the shows out to their PocketPC and watch them while they're traveling across the country or while they're commuting in to work. Over a home network they can stream the videos to other PCs, wireless laptops, wireless Web tablets."

Watch a MASH re-run on the train to work on a device that fits in your pocket. One drawback is... the software interface could be easier to use, but the CEO says that will be one of the improvements in an update due shortly. The update will also allow users to save programs directly on to recordable CDs. That brings up copyright issues...

From our perspective, our software is all about personal use. We make it so that you can record your favorite shows and watch your favorite shows on your PocketPC over your home network on your PC over your Internet connection."

SnapStream doesn't encourage the sharing of those digital video files... .but that may not be enough to stop TV networks and Hollywood from being concerned. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
