New Strategy and Services From McAfee.com

Boot Camp feature for Tuesday, April 23, 2002

Uniting the McAfees. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. It has been a little confusing for consumers. There has been McAfee anti-virus software from Network Associates... and online protection services from McAfee.com. Even though McAfee.com was a spin-off... the two were competing. But now... the plan is to bring the dot com version of McAfee back into Network Associates. McAfee.com CEO Srivats Sampath...

"With the combination of Network Associates retail software and McAfee.com I think we will be a very close second to Symantec in the retail space. Network Associates is number one in the corporate space."

McAfee.com has just rolled out its next generation of Web-based security services... using a distributed grid to track threats and alert customers. And the company is making a free Security Center download available...

"Think of it as a console that gives you as an end user information about what your vulnerability index is."

It tracks your PCs vulnerability to viruses, hackers and Web sites that invade your privacy. What the center is, in reality, is a sales tool for the McAfee.com solutions to those issues... .

"You know if someone came in and rattled your door knob three times a day, there is a very high probability that you would go buy a home alarm system. And it's very similar to that, we let you know when somebody's rattling your door knob."

How rattled you'll be when you see the Security Center results depends upon the software you already have installed to safeguard your system. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
