Survivors of the Shoah CD ROM

Boot Camp feature for Wednesday, October 21, 1998

Steven Spielberg goes high tech to teach young people about the holocaust. I'm Fred Fishkin with Bootcamp, a report on computers and technology. (sound) It is the work of Spielberg's Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation. A two CD ROM set that takes students into the lives of four people who survived... .using video, photographs and narration by Winona Ryder and Leonardo DiCaprio... (sound) Spielberg calls the software, titled Survivors: Testimonies of the Holocaust, more important than Schindler's List.

"I wanted to do something deeply compelling, using some of my ability to use the medium of film, cinema, documentary, and especially the power of these survivors to reach out to you and make you understand what they survived and why, perhaps, if you really understand this, we, collectively, will never let this happen again anywhere in the world."

(sound)The foundation has interviewed nearly fifty thousand survivors so far. Spielberg says the plan, eventually, is to make the entire project available on the Internet. The CD ROMs will be distributed to many schools and will be available through the educational division of Cendant Software at 800-545-7677.
