Boot Camp feature for Tuesday, July 16, 2002

The force is with Nvidia. Bloomberg Boot Camp, a report on today's technology. Nvidia is the company that has won the hearts and wallets of computer and video game players with its graphics technology. It has been branching out... creating what it calls its Nforce chipset products. Now comes Nforce 2. Product manager Brian Huynh says it will bring new capabilities to PCs without the need for add-on cards...

"Nforce 2 is a revolutionary category of PC silicon. What it brings to the table are the following things. First and foremost is the ability to drive two displays at very attractive price points down to the motherboard level. So immediately out of the PC there's two video jacks that you can drive any combination of displays. Second thing, it has the ability to drive two networking ports so that it can turn your PC into a media gateway. It has the richest connectivity set in the industry. It has both USB 2.0 and 1394 so it connects to all PC peripherals as well as consumer electronics peripherals."

Like digital camcorders. The chipset also includes sound capability with Dolby Digital. The first PCs with Nforce2 will use AMD processors and should be available soon... .bringing lots of new functions to bargain priced computers...

"And the reason is because we have applied our integration discipline that we have on the graphics side... we have applied that to networking, we have applied that to audio, we have applied that to connectivity so that it drives the actual transistor count down to a very cost effective level."

Nvidia's competitors include ATI and Intel. Bloomberg Boot Camp, I'm Fred Fishkin.
